Chapel Hill Attractions

Chapel Hill has a vibrant music scene. Many area bars and clubs offer live music and often host local, national and international acts in all genres. Chapel Hill was the founding home of now defunct indie label, Mammoth Records, and is also the founding home of another top indie label, Yep Roc Records, which is owned by Redeye Distribution.

Bruce Springsteen has made a point to visit the town on several tours. His most recent appearance was on September 14, 2003, at Kenan Stadium with the E Street Band, and his fourth appearance overall. U2 also played at Kenan on the first date of their 1983 "War Tour," where Bono infamously climbed up to the top of the stage, during pouring rain and lightning, holding up a white flag for peace.

Chapel Hill is rapidly becoming somewhat of a hot spot for pop American cuisine. This is likely due to the college town's entrepreneur-friendly business startup environment and national media attention surrounding a few local culinary establishments, such as Foster’s Market, Mama Dip’s, Crook’s Corner, Café Driade, The Cackalacky Classic Condiment Company and the Lantern Restaurant.

The Morehead Planetarium was one of only a handful of planetariums in the nation when it opened in 1949. It has remained an important town landmark. Astronauts were trained there during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Another one of the town’s hallmark features is the giant sundial, featured in the rose gardens in front of the planetarium, located on Franklin Street.

UNC has been particularly successful at college basketball and women’s soccer (Mia Hamm played as an undergraduate at UNC). The area’s obsession with sports has been one of the most distinctive features of the town's culture, fueled by the rivalry among North Carolina's four Atlantic Coast Conference teams: the UNC Tar Heels, the Duke Blue Devils, the North Carolina State Wolfpack and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

For more than 30 years, Chapel Hill has sponsored Festifall, an annual street fair held each October. The fair offers booths to artists, craftspeople and food vendors. Performance space is also available for musicians and other performers. The fair draws crowds of thousands.

There are some unique village communities in Chapel Hill, such as Meadowmont Village and Southern Village. Both have shopping centers, green space for concerts, movie theaters, community pools and schools.
