Chapel Hill, Orange County

Orange County, which has a population of approximately 125,000, is located in North Carolina. It is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the flagship institution of the University of North Carolina System.

The county was formed in 1752 from parts of Bladen County, Granville County, and Johnston County. It was named for the infant William V of Orange, whose mother Anne, daughter of King George II of Great Britain, was then regent of the Dutch Republic.

Orange County is divided into seven townships: Bingham, Cedar Grove, Chapel Hill, Cheeks, Eno, Hillsborough, and Little River. Adjacent counties are Person County, Durham County, Chatham County, Alamance County and Caswell County. About 25% of its 400 square miles of land remains undeveloped, resulting in lush foliage, gently rolling hills and scenic wooded areas. More than 45,000 acres in Orange County are used for farming, an industry which produces Grade A milk, tobacco and field crops, eggs, nursery and greenhouse products, livestock and forestry products.

The county’s concern for the natural environment is evident in local ordinances that preserve trees, scenic greenways for pedestrians, numerous bicycle lanes, curbside recycling programs and the clean surroundings that are carefully maintained. The Orange County quality of life contributes to the area’s vast appeal.
