Chapel Hill Stats

The population of nearly 50,000 is diverse, consisting of university faculty and staff, students, business people, and retirees from all over the world, not to mention the native “Chapel Hillians.”

The town's transformation from a small, relatively rural, turn-of-the-century village to a thriving, cosmopolitan university city has occurred since 1940, largely due to corresponding growth and change in the university.

While recognizing that the town has moved beyond its sole identity with the university, this association will always remain essential to the identity of Chapel Hill — not only as a prime employer, but as the focus of town activities that range from learning and the free exchange of ideas, to the wide variety of athletic and cultural programs it sponsors.

According to the 2000 Census, Chapel Hill consists of 48,715 people, 17,808 households and 8,138 families. The racial makeup of the town is 77.95 percent white; 11.42 percent African American; 7.18 percent Asian; 3.21 percent Hispanic or Latino; 0.42 percent Native American; 0.02 percent Pacific Islander; 1.16 percent other races; and 1.85 percent from two or more races.

Proportionately, Chapel Hill is North Carolina's best educated city, with 77 percent of adult residents (25 and older) holding an associate degree or higher, and 73.7 percent of adults possessing a baccalaureate degree or higher,*

In the town, the population is spread out with 15.1 percent under the age of 18; 37.1 percent from 18 to 24; 24.5 percent from 25 to 44; 15.3 percent from 45 to 64; and 8 percent who are 65 years of age or older. T
he median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 82.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.5 males.*

Government
Chapel Hill is governed by an elected mayor and eight council managers. Mayors serve two-year terms, and council members serve staggered four-year terms.
The town adopted its flag in 1990. According to flag designer Spring Davis, the blue utilized represents the town and the University of North Carolina (whose colors are blue and white); the green represents an awareness of the environment; and the “townscape” depicted in the inverted chevron shape represents themes of home, friends and community.
The current version of the town’s seal, adopted in 1989, is in the process of being replaced with a similar but simpler version. All versions of the seal, dating back to the 1930s, depict Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and protector of cities.
